KL Rahul: Adapting to Flexibility in Batting Positions with Confidence
Adelaide: Senior Indian batter KL Rahul expressed his readiness to perform for the team in any batting position, stating that he has overcome the mental challenges of being a “floater” in the lineup. With a decade of international cricket experience under his belt, Rahul’s adaptability has become a significant strength for the Indian cricket team.
Evolving Confidence in Versatility
Rahul delivered impressive performances during the first Test against Australia in Perth, scoring 26 and 77 while opening the innings. This was in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma, who was on paternity leave. As Rohit returns to the squad for the upcoming day-night Test, Rahul faces the possibility of a shift in his batting position. When asked about his role, the 32-year-old displayed his willingness to contribute wherever the team needs him.

“Anything—opening or middle order—I just want to be in the playing XI,” said Rahul during a press interaction. “Wherever the team needs me, I’ll go out there, bat, and play for the side.”
Rahul’s journey in Test cricket began as a middle-order batter in Australia nearly a decade ago. Over the years, he transitioned into an opener but experienced fluctuations in his position across formats. This inconsistency initially posed mental challenges.
Navigating Mental and Technical Adjustments
Reflecting on his early struggles, Rahul admitted that adapting to different batting roles was mentally taxing rather than a technical hurdle. “I have batted in many positions. Earlier, it was a bit of a challenge—mentally—about how to play those first 20-25 balls,” he shared.
The questions that plagued him revolved around striking the right balance between aggression and caution. “How early can I attack? How much do I need to be cautious? Those were tricky thoughts early on,” he elaborated.
However, with experience spanning numerous matches in varying conditions and roles, Rahul now feels more confident in his approach. His refined mindset focuses on simplifying the process. “If I can manage the first 30-40 balls, everything then feels like regular batting. That’s what I try to focus on,” he said.
Preparation and Readiness for Challenges
Rahul credited his improved adaptability to meticulous preparation. Before the Test series against Australia, he participated in the India A series to gain valuable game time. He was informed early about the possibility of opening the innings, which gave him adequate time to prepare.
“I was told quite early to be ready for opening. Missing out on the New Zealand series gave me time to focus on this role,” he explained. “Opening is something I have done for a long time in my career. I just had to go back and bat more to rediscover the processes I need to follow.”
Rahul highlighted the importance of practice matches in fine-tuning his game. “I came to Australia early to spend time in the middle and played practice games. These sessions were crucial for my preparation,” he noted.
Test Record and Key Performances
With over 3000 runs in 54 Tests, Rahul’s performances underscore his caliber. His record includes eight Test centuries, achieved in challenging conditions across countries like South Africa, England, and Australia. The adaptability and resilience he displayed in these innings reflect his ability to adjust to varied conditions and roles.

From the top of the order to the middle, Rahul has embraced his dynamic responsibilities with maturity. “Whether I am batting top of the order or in the middle, I have learned to approach the game based on the situation. This experience helps me manage my innings effectively,” he said.
Looking Ahead
As India prepares for the day-night Test in Adelaide, Rahul’s ability to deliver under different circumstances will be vital for the team’s success. His willingness to adapt and prioritize the team’s needs demonstrates his value as a versatile player. The mental strength he has developed over the years ensures he is ready to take on any challenge.
Rahul’s journey offers valuable lessons in resilience and self-belief. By overcoming mental barriers and embracing the demands of being a floater, he has emerged as a dependable and dynamic batter. His contributions will continue to play a pivotal role as India navigates the challenges of international cricket.
Through experience and determination, KL Rahul has proven that versatility is not a limitation but a strength—one that fuels his confidence to excel in any position, for the greater good of the team.
