Prithvi Shaw asked to learn from Virat Kohli after comparison with Sachin Tendulkar: ‘Clearly ignored his fitness’
If he wants to get out of the lean patch, then Prithvi Shaw will have to back himself”, feels Harbhajan Singh, who was once of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket and was once touted to carry Indian cricket forward. In this regard, he had suffered a series of setbacks and one of them includes not finding a buyer at the recently conducted IPL mega auction last month. Since his T20 debut in 2018, this is for the first time that he was overlooked for a contract.
Despite a dip in form, there have been reports of coaches unhappy with his attitude. Amidst all this criticism, Harbhajan has sympathised with the young cricketer.
“I don’t know what happened, but whatever did, I feel this is something Prithvi Shaw will need to take stock of and decide how to approach his career going forward. Such things either make or break a career and it’s up to Shaw to decide which road he wants to take,” Harbhajan said.

“It’s very tough for any player to digest that he’s gone unsold at the auction. And this is a player who people said is as talented as (Sachin) Tendulkar. Our problem is that they started comparing him so early with a player as big as Sachin,” he added.
Harbhajan feels Shaw is still too young to be held back by controversies.
According to World Cup Winner: This 25-year-old needs to learn from those mistakes and should concentrate more upon his fitness to get back on shape.
“I wish him all the best. Hope he is coming out of this setback pretty strong, works on his fitness. That is a very young bloke. Must be 24-25, 24 or 25 maybe. Can go a long distance if he looks after his fitness. Because the Prithvi Shaw we saw and that version we are seeing now-however size-wise-plainly disregarded his fitness,” added Harbhajan.
Explaining how Shaw can regain his form, the ex-cricketer said, “Look at the fitness of Team India players and it reflects on the ground. If he needs to look up to someone, make sure it’s Virat Kohli. I wish Shaw all the best so the next generation can also learn from him.”
Shaw has played five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I for India, scoring 528 runs across formats. Shaw last played for India was in July 2021. He played in a 20-over match against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The Mumbai batter had earlier smitten a record-breaking 379 against Assam in the Ranji Trophy 2022-23. Shaw also impressed during his debut for Northamptonshire in the One-Day Cup 2024, scoring 244 runs. However, he seemed a bit wayward during the 2024 IPL, scoring only 198 runs in eight games.
Owing to his dismal performance in the Indian domestic circuit in recent times, the opener was also axed from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad and is currently playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.
